Curriculum Overview
In Design and Technology pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.
Learners at Key Stage 3 have one hour per week of Technology. Topics they study include:
• Food Technology including the License to Cook certificate
• Computer Aided Design
• Systems and Control and Electronics
• Designing and Making Jewellery
In Key Stage 4 learners can follow a range of pathways and courses.
The department offers AQA GCSE subjects in:
• Food Technology
• Graphic Products
• Product Design
It also offers Edexcel Level 2 BTECs in Construction and Engineering.
In 2010 all subjects achieved outstanding GCSE/BTEC A*-C results.
In Key Stage 5 learners can build upon their success in Key Stage 4 by following a Level 3 course in Product Design, Construction and/or Engineering. These courses provide an excellent platform for entry to university and ultimately a professional career in Design, Construction or Engineering.
