Ecoschools

The EcoSchools group have recently modified the school's Mission Statement to reflect their commitment to leading the school into becoming an environmentally aware community.
Ecoschools ia a national initiative to encourage schools to become more environmentally friendly.
The Eco-Schools programme allows our school to analyse its operations and become more sustainable. By following the programme, our school will become a more stimulating place in which to learn, whilst reducing the environmental impact of the whole school on the community.
The scheme is rooted in a genuine desire to help children become more effective citizens by encouraging them to take responsibility for the future of their own environment. It is not about environmental excellence, it is about our school looking at how it impacts upon the environment and how this is decided upon and can be managed.
What can you do??
- Monitoring what we are doing in our environment.
- Action planning and decision-making,
- Take responsibility for the school environment and local area.
Our school is part of an international group of schools working towards education for sustainable development (ESD) and a better quality of life for local and (through joint action) global communities.
At St Mary's we have an Action Team made up of pupils from Year 7 to 11 who meet once a week to discuss progress. The group has already played a significant part in initiating the following eco-friendly actions:
Provide each department with a paper recycling bin
Place signs and posters around the school encouraging staff and pupils to turn off lights when leaving a room
Create an outside classroom area and flowerbed
