The Challenge - Summer Enrichment Programme
I am delighted to let you know that following a presentation in assembly a number of weeks ago, your child has been given the opportunity to sign up to The Challenge - an exciting summer programme which connects young people from different backgrounds across The North West, builds confidence and inspires them to make a positive impact in their local area. The Challenge is delivered by The Challenge Network, which is the largest provider of National Citizen Service, the government’s new youth development policy. They deliver a three part programme, open exclusively to Year 11s, which takes place in the summer after GCSEs. Some previous participants have had the opportunity to interview Michelle Obama, visit the Cabinet Office, meet David Cameron, and visit both the United Nations and the Google offices in London.

Study Support Information Evening 2
This event will take place on Tuesday 13th March, starting at 6.00 pm and follows on from the first Study Support event back in October. Parents and carers will have the opportunity to experience a ‘hands on’ session focusing on practical strategies and ‘top tips for success’ in support of students’ preparation for the final GCSE exams in the summer.
Parents and Carers will work alongside colleagues from St. Mary’s looking at ‘learning 2 learn’ skills as a taster to the independent learning skills that students will focus on at our annual Raising Attainment Conference at Leigh Sports Village on 29th March 2012. A further seminar will run after the Easter break where parents and carers will have the opportunity to engage in a more in depth seminar.
A pack of resources will be made available for those attending to take away on the night in addition to materials being available to download from our school website.
Year 11 Parents’ Evening
On Tuesday 24th January Parents and Carers had the opportunity to discuss students’ progress over the autumn term and any issues impacting on them meeting their individual target grades in different subjects.
During the consultation process, over three quarters of students from Year 11 were represented by parents and carers, with some excellent feedback from those in attendance who completed the evaluation form and the OFSTED style questionnaire.
In advance of Parents’ Evening, Mock Exam results were issued, along with Year 11 reports, including progress report, written comments by subject specialists and attendance report. During the week commencing Monday 16th January, students also had the opportunity to meet with their Form Tutor or a member of the Key Stage 4 Team on a one-to-one basis, to discuss their current progress in relation to target grades and to set personalised targets for this next term and in the run up to the final GCSE exams.
Year 11 Progress Review Week 2
All Year 11 students met with their Form Tutor or a member of the Key Stage 4 Team during week commencing 16th January for the second time this year to review their progress, discuss any barriers to their learning and set achievable targets for the remainder of the year in the lead up to the final GCSE exams this summer.
The review process has once again been overwhelmingly viewed as a positive experience and student evaluations have provided invaluable reflections on how the process can be improved further.
