Science Made Simple - Monday 23rd May
The Institute of Physics will be delivering shows to Y8 and Y9 pupils today.
Ever Wondered Why?
‘The Ever Wondered Why Roadshow’ took place on 31st March at Bolton Boys School. Thirty Year 10 pupils were fortunate enough to be invited to this exciting event run by the Ogden Trust. The show consisted of dramatic and thrilling demonstrations, encouraging pupils to think about the relevance of Physics to the world in which they live. The Physics concepts which underpinned the show gave pupils an insight into current science developments, as well as reinforcing important key ideas for their up and coming exams. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and came away enthused and inspired. The behaviour of the pupils was exemplary and was even commented on by the organisers of the show. Well done Year 10!
Up, Up and Away!
On Tuesday 22nd March thirty one Year 9 pupils attended a ‘Starchaser Roadshow’ at Brychall High School run by the Ogden Trust. The morning began with exciting demonstrations and an interactive presentation led by a scientist from the Starchaser team. Here the students learned about the development of rockets, the structure of the Universe and missions to space; past, present and future. Pupils then had a hands-on activity making and launching their own rockets helped by sixth form students. The roof of the school is now littered with paper rockets but the distances reached were amazing!
Pupils also had the opportunity to meet with STEM ambassadors (Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths) in a question and answer session. The aim was to inspire students and give them an understanding of the work of real-life scientists which obviously worked as a number of pupils are now considering a career in science. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and were a credit to St Mary’s. Well done Year 9!
Science Club
For the past term, Year 7 pupils have been invited to attend Science Club on Tuesdays at 1:30pm. During this half hour pupils are given the opportunity to explore exciting aspects of Science which they would not otherwise experience until further in their education. Pupils commented:
“I love doing exciting experiments, especially the ones with explosions!!”
“Wow! Science is exciting and fun!” Science Club is open to new Year 7 members. Come and join us! Miss Dainty & Miss Tinsley
Physics Olympics

Four year 9 students took part in a Physics Olympics on Friday 3 December 2010. Hannah Farrell, Alex Barlow, Clare Ginty and Olivia Darbyshire are four of the most gifted scientists in year 9 at St Mary’s and were selected to represent our school in the competition. They won a silver medal in one of the group events after competing against 25 other schools. Congratulations to all four students!”
